WOW! That’s the first thing that comes to mind during my first real day in Shanghai. As one of my university friends would always say, I’m impressed! We went to several places today including: the Bund, Shanghai Silk Factory, Yuyuan Garden, government sponsored foot massage place, and the most unbelievable acroabtic show that I’ve ever seen!

Well, we made it safely into Shanghai. The tour hasn’t officially started yet, so not too much to report…
I think so far the worst part of the trip has been getting to Shanghai. The trip from Tokyo to Narita took about 2 hours. I went with my cousin and his friend - we took the Skyliner from Nippori to Narita airport. We were trying to plan it so that we could meet my cousin\’s parents as they were flying in from Vancouver. There was about a 5 hour overlap. Unfortunately, the immigration for people entering Japan was over an hour to get through; and the plane was delayed by about an hour.

Wow! I can’t believe it. I’ll be heading off to China in just over a week! This is something I’ve thought of doing since I first came to Japan. Why? Well, as one person pointed out/asked, Why do you want to go to China; you’ll suddenly discover your ancestry and never come back again! He’s right. This being my first visit to mainland China will be a good opportunity to explore my roots - although the places that I will be visiting are different from the villages that my grandparents grew up in.

Dear friends,
How are you all doing? I’m in Dalian now, the city I am going to be teaching and I have been having a great time. My classes do not start until the third week of September because I’m teaching 2 graduate classes and 1 PHD class…yeap that’s right, I’m teaching doctorate students…pretty scary eh? The reason is because out of all of the other teachers, I have the highest degree so while some teachers have more teaching experience, they still get stuck with the undergrads while I get all the grad students.

I’m still alive after 6 weeks in China. I’ve just gotten back on land after a 4 day criuse of the Yangzi River. Gemma, Audrey and I were fortunate enough to catch one of the last criuses to see the 3 Gorges before the government closes down this section of the river on November 2nd for the completion of the largest hydroelectric dam in the world. The boat that we took was very local, although we were informed that this was the tourist boat. It was definitely an interesting experience from the very first morning where we pushed and shoved (we’re turning local - survival of the fittest) our way through the hordes of people into our 2nd class room.

Hey Gang!
Beijing…..freezing cold!
The Great Wall (Simatai)…..2 thumbs up! ***** Stars
The Forbidden City…..710 (great architecture, but kinda looked the same after awhile)
Tianamen Square…..it’s just square! (Licia???)
The Summer Palace…..810 (looks more maintained than FC)
Markets for Brand Name “knock offs”…..you see one, you’ve seen them all!
Best Washroom…..the one in my hotel…..just can’t get used to washroom stalls (squatting type) without doors
Most Annoying Hawker…..the middle aged lady who followed us for a couple of hours up the Great Wall trying to flog her t-shirts, post cards, and other Great Wall memorabilia
Best Imitation of a Western Restaurant…..McDonald’s (the only thing I could survive on without having to order in Mandarin)
Most Annoying Local Habit…..(I could put up with the spitting but the lady on the subway who picked her nose in front of me…”dig, dig, dig!”…and wiped it on the hand rail WINS!
I would have warned the fella who grabbed the rail a minute later about it, but as we say in Canada…..C’est la vie!
See y’all in Dalian!

Hellooooooooooo, everyone!
I’ve been in Dalian 4 days and have spent most of the time shopping, sightseeing, and partying hard - yeeeehaaaaaah! I’ve attended several of Bert’s classes where he’s teaching English to university students. Bert and I have told them that we met thru a mutual friend named Crazy Bill. Many students who want to practice their English have taken me out and about. They have mucho questions about Canada such as what the people are like, what we do for entertainment, do we all drive cars, what our social structure is like, job opportunities - but most importantly they ask Is Crazy Bill really Crazy?? Is he adopted??? How many times has he fallen on his head???

Dear Adventurasia,
I just wanted to tell you about my interesting experience durng my second day in Hong Kong. It started with one of my favourite breakfast items - congee with salted duck egg and pork; daikon cake; and hot coffee. Afterwards, it was off to one of the computer shopping malls to take a look at computer parts etc… (My friend knows all the best spots). After that we went to Ikea and Andrew, I tried to find that table but didn”t see any coloured tables… My friend said it wasn’t worth shipping stuff back…

This is your friendly webmaster writing to you live from Hong Kong. Today was another great day - Hong Kong is a great country! I was just telling my friend that out of all the other countries/cities I visited in Asia (Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Malaysia) Hong Kong would probably be the most livable (apart from Japan of course). The food is great; the people are friendly; there is always something to see and do; the night life is exciting; and I’m able to communicate in English and in my broken cantonese.
