FIFA World Cup 2002 : birth of a football fan

Up until recently, I’d have to say that I really wasn’t too interested in football (or soccer as it is called in Canada / USA). This all changed during the Japan v Belgium match which took place on June 4 6:00 PM. After that match, my outlook and interest in football was to change (for the better many would argue). It could also be because NHL hockey was coming to a close, and my home team, the Canucks got knocked out during the first round.

Maldives - Vacation in Paradise

(Written by: Ikumi Takada, Sept 2002)

The Maldives, about 700 kilometers southwest of Sri Lanka, are made up of many tiny islands, which have evolved from circular coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. Some people describe the place a “refugee” or “distressing center”, where time stands still and only light, color and tranquillity prevail. Being a perfect retreat for people living in a hectic world, the islands are also the place of a dream for many divers. We are also divers and spent most our time in scuba diving.

[Macau] Mini-Taipei, Sex Toys, Taking a Crap & Chinglish

(Written by: Simon Lai, around 2001~2003)

Hey, folks!

Everyone doin’ OK at wherever y’all are? Anything new? Has B been getting himself into any excruciatingly abnormal situations, N?

Well, what can I say about Macau? It’s an old polluted island which has the same crazy drivers as Taipei (scooters on sidewalks, running red lights, fanatical attempts to run down pedestrians)…..hmmmm…….I think I’ll call it “Mini-Taipei“. The beef jerkey/egg roll vendors are also overly aggressive as they try to get your business. There’s practically a jerkey vendor on every block grabbing you off the sidewalk a shoving samples into your hand in the futile hope that you’ll buy! Nonetheless, I still had fun. I hired a rickshaw driver to show me the main tourist sites. Not sure if I got ripped off but he charged 150 $HK per hour. The storefront shopping there is about the same prices as HK.

[India / Nepal] The Extended Tour

[China Trip] Exploring my Heritage

(Written back around summer 2002)

I grew up in a small town, with a population of under 100,000 (depending on whose statistics you looked at).During my elementary and high school years, there were literally only a handful of Asian people attending the school.Normally it would be my sibling, and possibly 1 or 2 other people plus their brother or sister. I felt different, I didn’t feellike I really fit in, and in some cases, was treated differently by my peers. I tried my best to fit in with the rest of the group. But deep down, I was different, and there’s no denying that.

[China Trip] Days 7 - 14 in Beijing

(Written back around summer 2002)

On the seventh day of our tour we flew from the Nanjing Lukou International Airport (quite impressive actually) to Beijing International Airport where we were greeted by a new regional guide named Jack. He had an interesting joke - that it was a good thing he didn’t catch the plane with us as someone was bound to say Hi Jack! It is here that we were to complete Days 7 to 11 of the Silkway Holidays tour and continue on with the Looch Extended Tour.

[China Trip] Day 6 Highlights in Nanjing

(Written back around summer 2002)

On Day 6 of the tour we went to Nanjing, a place perhaps better known for the Nanjing Massacre which took place in 1937 and as many as 300,000 people may have died under Japan’s assault. Unfortunately our tour specialist for Nanjing showed a bit of hatred for the Japanese because of this war atrocity - and even though several of us wanted to see the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, she refused. (In my opinion) it’s unfortunate that she would continue to carry this incident from almost 70 years ago as a present day grudge.

[China Trip] Day 3 & 4 Highlights in Zhouzhuang / Hangzhou

(Written back around summer 2002)

On our third and fourth days of our tour of China, we went to the ancient town of Zhouzhuang Watertown; enjoyed a fabulous Pork Shank lunch, took a look at a couple of different bridge types - one is called a ‘double key’ and they other is ’round and square.’ Afterwards we went to the Shen Residential home where we saw a traditional style Chinese kitchen.
