Bikram Yoga - Langley

Bikram Yoga LangleyOn December 24, 2007, Ikumi, Mr. Nutcracker and I decided to visit Candice and Derek’s Bikram Yoga studio in Langley. We set out early in the day and arrived a couple of hours later (after making a couple of detours and encountering construction delays along the way).

For both Ikumi and I, it was our first time to try Bikram’s Yoga.
It was difficult! However, with Candice’s constant, press…ahem motivation and encouragement, I managed to complete all the postures without sitting anything out and minimal amount of muttering to myself about what I got myself into. As the room was about 42~44 degrees, there was one point where I felt dizzy but, I managed to get through the exercise without fainting.

It’s definitely something that looks easier than it really is. After completing a session of Bikram’s Yoga, I felt like I could overcome anything! Well, almost…

Even our beloved, Mr. Nutcracker, joined in on one of the postures:

I hear they are running a Valentine’s special now, please check it out:

What’s with the nutcracker?

Home Sweet HomeAbout a week prior to Christmas 2007, Ikumi and I attended a friend’s Christmas party. During this party, we participated in a gift exchange whereby we pick a gift, and somebody else can then steal that gift or pick a new gift. During one of the rounds, Ikumi decided to steal the nutcracker from another person (I believe the free beers from around the world that came with the nutcracker also gave her a bit of an incentive). We later found out that the nutcracker has changed ownership amongst our group of friends for the past 4 years. In many cases, the nutcracker was relegated to the owner’s broom closet.

As we want to make up for lost time, we’ve decided to take the nutcracker with us on our travels throughout Japan and other countries around the world.

Over the course of the year, we plan to update this blog section with news about the nutcracker’s travels.

Aikido in Japan

(Written by Mike L., originally posted on adventurasia.freezope.org around 2003~2004. Note that the webpage that the author mentions is currently down, but will be added in the future.)

I came to the land of the rising sun more than two years ago (yikes!!). Aside from the regular routine of working, eating, and sleeping, I knew I wouldn’t be here forever, so I wanted to do something that I could bring back with me. And, since I was in Japan, I wanted to pursue something Japanese.

My First (Japanese) Baseball Game

(Originally posted on adventurasia.freezope.org around 2003~2004)

Before coming to Japan, I read somewhere that one of the Must-Do’s is to go and watch a Japanese baseball game live (this, along with climbing Mt. Fuji). Well, after being here just over 5 years, I can now say that I’ve done that. My friend helped get a couple of ‘non-reserved’ tickets to yesterday’s Hanshin Tigers v. Yakult Swallows game. It’s been said that if the Tiger’s win the championships, Japan will be lifted from it’s 10-year old recession and the economy will finally recover. Until recently, the Tigers have been considered at the bottom of the league, until this year, that is - they are currently the number 1 team! There still might be hope for Japan afterall.

Osaka Trip / Universal Studios Japan

(Originally posted on adventurasia.freezope.org around 2003~2004)

Last Wednesday, my friend and I took a couple days off from work and flew down to Osaka. The flight itself was about 1 hour long, although getting to/from the airport was another couple of hours. The neat thing was that on the way there, each seat had it’s own tv screen where you could watch tv, or play games. I opted for the latter, and played Connect 4 and Othello against the computer. (As far as I can tell, they don’t allow person v. person games).

Metallica: Japan Tour 2003

(Originally posted on adventurasia.freezope.org around 2003)

Last week, November 11th, I had the privelege of attending my first Metallica concert, in Tokyo! (Well Saitama to be exact.) My boss had an extra ticket, and let me have it as a sort of ‘bonus’. It was an awesome concert, lasting a full two hours, with songs from various albums (Kill em All; Justice for All; St. Anger; ‘Black Album’; Master of Puppets; and possibly some others).

Marine Day : A Day at Sea Paradise

(Originally posted on adventurasia.freezope.org around 2003~2004)

As today was a Japanese National Holiday - Umi No Hi (Marine Day), my friend and I decided to go to the Sea Paradise amusement area in Hakajima (about 30 minutes west of Yokohama). It was a very interesting experience and I’d recommend it to anyone who is interested in ‘marine mammals’ or other living creatures found in the sea.

Typhoons, Heat Waves and Bombs in the Sky

(Originally posted on adventurasia.freezope.org around 2003~2004)

During this past weekend, Mother Nature displayed an awesome show of power.

From around midnight Friday through to late Saturday evening, the area that I am living in was pounded by high winds and torrential rains. Every few minutes, the wind would hit with a loud thud against one of the large windows in my apartment. (I live on the 4th floor and there aren’t any tall buildings or trees nearby in which to shield my apartment from the elements). Out of curiousity, I would briefly open the window to see how bad it was, and by the time I shut the window, I was sprayed with water, not to mention the furniture just below the window getting splashed with water.
