My Life in Taiwan - Update 3

(Written by: Jerry Hong, 2000)

Well, UPDATE #3 is finally here…. I know some of you are dying to know what is new here..And what we’ve been doing…

The biggest thing you might be wondering is the fact that we had another earthquake.. But this one was really small.. not even big enough to knock things off the shelves.. It was a real neat feeling though. It felt like we were on a raised wood platform, and a herd of elephants running past us.. the entire concrete floor that we were on vibrated…

Other things here are good, the weather is a blistering 30 degrees every day, with or without the sun through the smog… I can definitely notice the sky getting grayer and grayer from build-up of pollution. I’m so happy that i get to go down to Kenting every weekend, and not have to be trapped in the city.

Being a teacher is a blast……. There are so many fun things I can get away with here. For example, when one of my kids are real bad, I soak them with my Super Soaker water gun…….. But I must say I have a lot of respect for those teachers that teach in the public education system, cause it’s really hard work. For a month and a half, I taught 10 classes of grade 2 students each week, each class had 30 to 35 kids… I must say it has been the hardest month and a half that I’ve been throuh…… But I did learn a few things from this

experience… Never work in the public education system, no matter how much money they offer you….. and they can never pay you enough to teach there…. I’m soooooo glad that I didn’t sign a contract there…. now I know why some people say they hated teaching here, it was becasue they taught in the public system…

We’ve meet a lot of great people here, from all over the world…. owning a bar is great.. I know I said I would like to travel a lot while i’m here, but the time hasn’t been right… Ihoping I will get to go and see more of Taiwan in the next few months to come. For those of you that know my friend Rob from Nanaimo, (another part owner of our bar) He was here for about a month, and now he is in Australia for a month.. WHAT A GREAT LIFE… I wish i could do that…
