My Life in Taiwan: Update 1

(Written by: Jerry Hong, 2000)

We have been in Kaohsiung, Tawan for two weeks now, and we are still trying to get settled in. But I thought it was time to give everyone an update. So here it goes:

The first two weeks have been really exciting. Let me first begin by saying that if you don’t speak chinese here, everything you do is an adventure. We can’t even order food from McDonalds, the only way to order is to either point to something that someone else has ordered, or to point to pictures, if available. It was so hard for us to try to get rice, so i went out and bought a rice cooker….

Back to my other exciting stories…

Last week Vince and I thought we were going to get killed or something…. We must have had the worst taxi driver on the entire island… This guy was so stupid, or on some serious drugs because he didn’t have a clue to where he was going… We wanted to go to a major road downtown, I mean this road is so big you can spot it from a mile away in the air… but he was so dumb, he didn’t know what we were talking about.. he first took us to some dark ally, the name had no resemblance to the name we gave him….. and the address we gave him was also written in CHINESE… The next stop he took us was to an end of a dock yard… we thought for sure we were going to get jumped or mugged…. or a combination of both… We were so pissed off, we just got out and started walking.. luckly there was another taxi around… but he already had some seamen in it, but they were nice enought to let us have a ride with them…. The two men just came off a freighter from Hong Kong… and the funny thing was that they spoke a type of chinese that I could understand… which was really cool, cause this was the first time i could understand someone else…

This is all i’m going to write for now.. I got a lot more great and funny stories to tell… like a couple of days ago Alice to us to some wierd hotsprings in the countyside… or the way everyone stares at Vince and Kelly….I tell more next time…
