Living in a Sauna (Oven)
(Originally posted on adventurasia.freezope.org around 2003~2004)
The past couple weeks have been unbelievably hot … and humid. The average temperature has been between 30 to 35 degrees. Yesterday, according to the news, the mercury hit 39.5 degrees celcius a new all-time record. And, it’s only mid-July!
I feel like I’m living in a sauna/oven. I can’t seem to get a good night’s sleep as I end up waking in the middle of the night covered in perspiration. I even bought a pillow the other day that has a built in compartment for an ice pack — it works okay for about an hour — before it loses it’s coldness.
During the day, I have my airconditioner on and set to 26-28 degrees celcius! Don’t want to give the body too much of a shock when I leave the place. Of course the trains probably have the airconditioner set at 20 degrees, and you’re pretty much freezing. It’s so easy to get sick in the summer because of the air con.

Good evening, Please forgive me I just wanted to introduce myself..My name is Charmaine and in October my husband and I are travelling through Asia for about 20 days. We’ll be visiting Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bangkok etc. We’re from Miami, FL and in our early 30’s and just wanted to know what would be some nice (interesting) spots to visit while in Tokyo..Unfortunately we’ll only be there for 3 nights but any suggestions would be appreciated..this also goes for the other stops we’re making if there were other destinations everyone could help us out in… Thanks in advance and I hope everyone’s is doing well wherever you are:^) Thank You, Charmaine
Hi Charmaine, Sounds like a very exciting trip! Here are some suggestions of possible places to visit, in no particular order:
* Roppongi Hills - newly built mega complex complete with restaurants, shops, movie theatre (nicest in Tokyo!), art gallery (on the 53rd floor)
* Akihabara Electric Town - eye candy for gadget lovers; there must be literally hundreds of small and large shops chock full of electronic goods
* Tsukiji Fish Market - go there bright and early and order the sushi breakfast for about $20 USD
* Odaiba - futuristic city concept built on top of a landfill; lots of shopping and other attractions
* Asakusa - famous for the temple and gate, lots of shops selling traditional foods and souvenirs, good place to go if you can’t make it to Kamakura
* Kamakura - lots and lots of temples, shrines, etc. It’s about 1.5~2 hours from Tokyo and you should give yourself a day.
* Ikebukuro - if you like shopping, I believe 3 of Tokyo’s largest department store complexes are at this station. Tobu Department, Seibu Department and Sunshine City. If you like cars, the Toyota Amlux is worth checking out.
* Ginza/Yurakucho - high end (window) shopping. All the major brands have shops in this area. Who says Japan is in a recession?
* Harajuku - more shopping, famous shrine, kids dressed up in costumes (cosplay), near omotesando and aoyama stations for even more shopping
* Imperial Palace - to be honest, I’ve never been inside, but most people that visit Tokyo end up going there
Hope this helps! Have a safe trip.
