5th Annual Chimaki Party

(Originally posted on adventurasia.freezope.org around 2003~2004)

How are you doing? It’s rather unbelievable, but we’ve just had our 5th Annual Chimaki Party! For those of yous new to this, you may be wondering how this annual event was started? Well, about 4 years ago, a group of us Japanese + foreigners had met (through a string of coincidences / common network of friends and acquaintances) and we all started talking about the types of food that we missed from back home.

One of those things was ‘Chimaki’ or ‘Joong’ as we call it in Cantonese. The funny thing was that while we all LOVED to eat these ‘rice dumplings’ , none of us knew how to WRAP them! So the first time, we had set of paper instructions (kind of like origami instructions) and we tried to follow them. To make a long story short, the chimaki turned out really well, and the best Chimaki wrapper I’ve met in Japan is none other than … Shinji.

In the past, the chimaki party was held at Wai Cheng’s apartment, but starting from last year, the location was moved to my apartment - based in Kami Itabashi.

For this year’s event, there were a total of 8 participants including myself.
