Causeway Bay & Victoria Peak
(Written back around 2001)
Dear Adventurasia,
I just wanted to tell you about my interesting experience durng my second day in Hong Kong. It started with one of my favourite breakfast items - congee with salted duck egg and pork; daikon cake; and hot coffee. Afterwards, it was off to one of the computer shopping malls to take a look at computer parts etc… (My friend knows all the best spots). After that we went to Ikea and Andrew, I tried to find that table but didn”t see any coloured tables… My friend said it wasn’t worth shipping stuff back…
Afterwards, I walked around the Causeway Bay area some more - bought some DVD’s from HMV - on sale, 3 for only about 15 USD! I called another one of my friends and we went for Dim Sum / Yum Cha at a place called City Hall Dim Sum. It was packed! The food was soo good! Like nothing I’ve had before. Surprisingly, my friend likes the chicken feet - so we ordered that, followed by: steamed rice rolls; deep fried fish cake; har gow; sieu mai; ribs with black bean sauce; and some sort of tofu with fish paste. Awesome.
After that we went up to Victoria Peak and had a coffee while enjoying the view. (Would you believe they serve Nanaimo Bars there!). My friend had to leave earlier as he was heading out to Shanghai the next day, but I decided to stick around some more.
I went up the rest of the mountain to the top and saw the Garden, came back down and went in to the (you guessed it) a shopping complex. I bought this special package which allowed you to watch a movie in which the chairs move with the action; the Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum; and a famous wax museum with very lifelike dolls… Of course I took a picture of almost every character - so you can test your trivia later one.
Finally, after getting a few souvenirs, I decided to take the tram back down (I came up by bus, and enjoyed seeing the multimillion dollar homes on the peak). After getting down, I walked around the Central area a bit and kept walking and walking and ended up at another station - last one on that line. I then took the train to Jordan and did some more shopping.
I asked many store keepers about car air fresheners to no avail - Bill, I’m going to need your help to explain what I need to the shopkeeper. Getting a bit hungry, I found a wonton noodle shop and had a quick bite.
My feet were aching, and I decided I should head back to my friend’s place. Had another bowl of congee with chicken this time and then started writing this piece.
Well that’s another day in the life… I have some really stunning pictures from the peak - both in the day time as well as night and will be uploading them shortly. So far, I think I’ve taken about 200 photos - so for those who want to see what I did, you should have a pretty good idea.
Well I’m beat, will write again tomorrow.
