[China Trip] Day 1

(Written back around summer 2002)

Well, we made it safely into Shanghai. The tour hasn’t officially started yet, so not too much to report…

I think so far the worst part of the trip has been getting to Shanghai. The trip from Tokyo to Narita took about 2 hours. I went with my cousin and his friend - we took the Skyliner from Nippori to Narita airport. We were trying to plan it so that we could meet my cousin\’s parents as they were flying in from Vancouver. There was about a 5 hour overlap. Unfortunately, the immigration for people entering Japan was over an hour to get through; and the plane was delayed by about an hour.

In the end, we had to check in and go through security. We ended up meeting everybody in Shanghai airport.

How was the flight? Hmm, as my cousin put it, the stewardess in charge of our section was sure grumpy. We flew Northwors… I mean Northwest. By the end of the flight she was kicking the cabinet doors where the food trays go, slamming the phone, throwing things around… must be that time of the month

First impressions about Shanghai. Well so far it’s been positive. After checking into the hotel (which is about an hour from Pudong Airport) we walked around the area. This was after midnight, and I felt quite safe. The weather was great, nothing like what it is in Tokyo - however, today looks quite warm.

The hotel has a really nice breakfast buffet - serving a mix of both western and chinese foods. There\’s even a guy in the corner that will make omelettes for you with the toppings that you want. Tomorrow, I’m going to try and see if he will make an omu-raisu for me.

Well, not much more to say. I have to join my tour group in about 10 minutes. I’ll report on what happens today in my next update.
